On July 28, 2021, Ambassador Qin Gang delivered remarks to Chinese and US media upon his arrival. The transcript of his remarks is as follows:
It is a great honor to be the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the United States of America.
Fifty years ago, Dr. Henry Kissinger paid a secret visit to China and opened the door to normalization of Sino-US relations. It was during the Cold War; at that time, there was virtually no contact between the two countries. Dr Kissinger had to travel secretly to China via a third country. Fifty years later today, as China’s 11th Ambassador to the United States, I can travel most openly and fly directly to that country. How the world has changed over time! I think the door to Sino-US relations, which is already open, cannot be closed. It is the trend of the world, the call of the time and the will of the people.
Over the past half-century, Sino-US relations have continued to progress despite the twists and turns. This not only had a profound impact on the two countries, but also changed the course of history and the world in significant ways. Today’s world is going through major changes unprecedented in a century. As two great countries different in history, culture, social system and stage of development, China and the United States are entering a new phase of mutual exploration, understanding and adaptation, trying to find a way to get along in the new era. Sino-US relations have again come to a new critical turning point, facing not only many difficulties and challenges, but also great opportunities and potentials. The direction this important relationship will take is vital for the well-being of the Chinese and American peoples and for the future of the world. The two peoples and the international community hope for a healthy, stable and growing relationship between the two countries.
The correct path of the world is that of vicissitudes. As President Xi Jinping said, we must chart new paths and build new bridges whenever necessary to overcome all risks and challenges. President Joe Biden said anything is possible. I will continue the spirit of the phone call between the two presidents on the eve of the Chinese New Year and seek to build bridges of communication and cooperation with all sectors of the United States. I look forward to working closely with them to safeguard the foundations of Sino-US relations, uphold the common interests of the two peoples, and strive to put Sino-US relations back on the right track, thus paving the way for a good understanding between the two countries. mutually – mutual respect, equality, win-win cooperation and peaceful coexistence – from possibility to reality.
As the United States battles COVID-19 hard and revives the economy under President Biden’s leadership, I wish the country an early victory against the pandemic, and I wish the American people all the best.
