Southfield (CW50) – Detroit Book City is a small, independent bookstore that specializes in and markets books, media, and events to the African American community.

Founded in January 2016, Detroit Book City has become a trusted resource for finding black freelance authors of books for adults and children. The idea behind the store was to showcase these authors and give black media a greater presence in the community.

Janeice Haynes, owner of Detroit Book City, joins Lisa Germani on Community Connect to discuss the importance of books, especially books aimed at a specific community, and also talks about contextual locations where books can be found during the shutdown. store due to COVID -19.

The store offers new and used books for adults and children with an emphasis on self-help, black consciousness, the spiritual, practical, urban fiction, memoirs and biographies.

Detroit Book City hosts several family book exhibitions each year, featuring local and national African American book authors. They also set up kiosks at local festivals, schools, conferences and other community venues.

Due to COVID-19, the store is currently closed, but has several outdoor pop-up locations in the Detroit metro.
