In memory: Michael Olivas

Michael A. Olivasa member of the American Law Institute since 1987, deceased April 21. As a member of ALI, Olivas participated in the Member Advisory Group for Principles of the Law, Student Sexual Misconduct: Procedural Frameworks for Colleges and Universities, and Reformulation of the Law. Before his retirement in 2019, Olivas was William B. Bates Emeritus Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance at the University of Houston Law Center, where he served on the faculty for 38 years. University of Houston-Downtown President Loren J. Blanchard rremembers Olivas in this tribute.

Olivas was a national leader in immigration legal research, writing extensively on Latino civil rights. In 2020 he wrote Maybe at Dream: A Legal and Political History of the DREAM Act and DACAthe first one book on the full history of the DREAM Act and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

In 2018, the Association of American Law Schools honored Oliva with the 2018 AALS Triennial Award for Lifetime Service to Legal Education and the Legal Profession.
