Steven O. Weise receives Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Steven O. Weise of Proskauer Rose on Tuesday, May 16. This award is given from time to time to a member who, for many years, has played a major role in the Institute as an institution, accepting great responsibilities as an officer, board member, president of committee or project participant and helping to keep the Institute on a steady path.
Weise helps keep the Institute on a steady course by wearing many hats. Elected to ALI in 1992 and to the Council in 2012, he is currently Chairman of the Investment Committee, having served as Chairman of the Program and Marketing Committee of ALI CLE. His dedication to helping the Institute provide continuing legal education to lawyers continued after his term as President ended. In fact, Weise was one of our panelists on the Sunday program at this year’s CLE Annual Meeting on Emerging Technologies.
As ALI co-chair for the Principles for a Data Economy, completed in 2021, Weise helped coordinate the work of this joint venture with the Institute of European Law, the first such transatlantic collaboration. With his wide range of UCC expertise, he has been an ALI nominee to the standing drafting committee of the Uniform Commercial Code since the mid-1990s. He is also an advisor to the Restatement of the Law, Consumer Contracts and Restatement of the Law Fourth, Property.
Although Weise has contributed deeply to projects related to his professional experience, his enthusiasm and talent for taking information from one area of law and applying it to another is evident in his extensive participation in the member advisory groups of countless projects, including several Restatement Third of Torts Projects: Final Provisions, Remedies, Intentional Torts, Liability for Economic Injury, and Liability for Physical and Emotional Injury. The work produced by the Institute would not be of such high caliber without the perspective of the generalist.
Outside of his time at ALI, Weise is a partner in the Corporate department of Proskauer and practices in all areas of commercial law. His finance experience is extensive, particularly in those secured by personal assets, including structured finance. He also handles matters involving California anti-deficit real estate laws, workouts, warranties, property sales, equipment leasing, commercial papers and checks, letters of credit and investment securities. Weise’s experience spans e-commerce, contract law (including “plain language” writing), legal opinions, and consumer credit law compliance matters. He lectures extensively on commercial law topics and legal opinion letters, and is the author of over 100 articles on these topics.
Weise received his BA from Yale University and his JD from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
